Achieving Fitness: An Adventure Approach, Feb. 3-4, 2010. |
Who should attend?
Physical educators, fitness trainers, health educators, camp counselors, after-school personnel, staff who work with youth at risk or adjudicated youth, those interested in supporting student's and clients' health-related fitness.
Participants will:
- Review basic fitness principals.
- Review core concepts in adventure programming and understand how they are connected to improving health-related fitness.
- Learn the concept of student self-efficacy and its role in improving health-related fitness.
- Learn how this methodology increases engagement, participation and enjoyment in fitness activities.
- Practice a variety of activities designed to support students' achievement of health-related fitness including cardiovascular, muscular strength/endurance, flexibility and body composition.
- Learn to integrate both the Achieving Fitness: An Adventure Activity Guide and the Achieving Fitness: Student Journal into your own fitness program.
- Receive a copy of the book and journal.

Engaging Activities for Social and emotional learning: An Adventure approach, Apr. 27-28, 2010. |
Who should attend?
Designed for those working with school age children in any setting, or grade, and who are looking for engaging ways to develop or reinforce Social Emotional Learning (SEL) programs or practices. Also beneficial for those working with populations who lack or have missed age-appropriate Social and Emotional skill development.
You will:
- Participate in adventure activities that support implementation of Social Emotional Learning strategies and support the teaching of academic content.
- Gain information and insight into theory, research results and components associated with the most effective approaches to SEL programming.
- Develop instructional skills for specific SEL content areas such as Goal Setting, Decision Making, Managing Emotions and Engaging in Social Relationships.
- Explore best practices for creating and evaluating a relationship-centered school or community agency.
- Share and explore learning applications in your own setting.

Adventure with Youth at Risk: An Introduction to Behavior Management. May 11-13, 2010 |
Who should attend?
Anyone who works with vulnerable and/or at-risk youth with behavior and/or mental health issues in alternative school, community-based, residential or juvenile justice settings will benefit from the tools and methods taught in this workshop. This workshop is designed for program directors, counselors, social workers, facilitators, crisis workers, safety officers, educators, residential staff and para professionals who are seeking alternative approaches that are research based and develop pro-social skills and long-term behavioral change.
You will:
- Learn how to use PA's core concepts to increase pro-social behavior and achieve social and emotional learning objectives.
- Learn how to use adventure to engage youth who present a challenge to traditional group process.
- Learn techniques to empower groups and individuals to be less dependent on your management and direction.
- Learn tools for moving towards intrinsic versus extrinsic rewards.
- Learn to frame and teach adventure activities to address individual and group therapeutic issues.
- Discuss the use of effective, natural and logical consequences that value the individual and support the group process.
- Consider case studies and examples of implementations that will inform your own use of this model.

Adventure Curriculum for Physical Education
(2 day workshop), June 7-8, 2010 |
Who should attend?
Physical educators, recreation specialists, teachers, practitioner or camp staff. Anyone who is interested in implementing a sequential curriculum that addresses Social and Emotional Learning and physical skill development (Project Adventure's k-12 Adventure Curriculum for Physical Education) in their program.
You will:
- Learn to connect adventure activities to specific learning outcomes, state and national standards, using the ACPE text as a guide.
- Receive a copy and learn how to facilitate activities from the Adventure Curriculum for Physical Education (during workshop you'll select the appropriate level: Elementary, Middle or High School).
- Learn age-appropriate assessment tools for adventure education.
- Explore core themes of the curriculum by grade level.
- Discuss how to integrate PA's ACPE curriculum into your specific program.
- Experience a fun, positive and professional environment and learn how to recreate that in your own environment.

Portable Adventure, Novermber, 8-10, 2010 |
Who should attend?
This workshop is ideal for those who are new to facilitating Adventure education and want to implement Adventure programs without low or high challenge course elements.
Physical Educators, camp staff, out-of-school time personnel, human service professionals, recreation specialists, teachers, counselors, professional development consultants and coaches have found this to be a valuable resource.
You will:
- Learn skills to facilitate portable icebreakers, community-building games, and problem-solving initiatives.
- Learn to use a variety of easily available props, games and materials.
- Learn to use sequencing, framing and debriefing skills to enhance the effectiveness of adventure and cooperative activities.
- Be able to implement an effective and fun adventure program without a challenge course!
